Honduras

Vet requirements, breed rules, airline realities and what happens at the border · updated 2026-07-11

Official Import Rules

For travelers bringing 1–2 dogs (the typical scenario), Honduras requires a current rabies vaccination, an export veterinary health certificate from the country of origin, and a current vaccination record. No zoosanitary import permit is needed in this case — you simply present these documents to Cuarentena (quarantine) officials at the port of entry for inspection. A zoosanitary import permit from SENASA is only required when importing 3 or more pets at once. Microchip recommended. Documents should be in Spanish. Arrival through Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP) San Pedro Sula or Toncontín (TGU) Tegucigalpa.

City & Housing Notes

San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa are the main cities. Roatán (Bay Islands) is a popular expat destination with a large English-speaking community. La Ceiba is the gateway to the Bay Islands. Vet care is available in major cities.

Vets & Health After Arrival

Basic vet care in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. Roatán has limited but adequate options for routine needs. Costs are very affordable. For specialist care, San Pedro Sula or Guatemala City offer more options.

Leaving Honduras With Your Dog

Exit requires a health certificate from a SENASA-approved vet. Processing usually 1–2 working days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Roatán good for dogs?

Yes. Popular expat island with English widely spoken. Basic vet care available. Warm climate and relaxed lifestyle.

Is vet care affordable?

Very. Honduras has some of the lowest vet costs in the Americas.

Do documents need to be in Spanish?

Yes for the mainland. Roatán is more flexible with English but official documents should be in Spanish.

Do I need a zoosanitary import permit for my dog?

Only if you're importing 3 or more pets at once. If you're bringing just 1 or 2 dogs, no import permit is required — you only need an export veterinary health certificate and vaccination record, plus an inspection by Cuarentena officials at the port of entry.

Community reports are useful for practical details such as which cargo desk answers the phone, how long collection took, or whether a landlord asked for insurance. Treat them as tips, then verify rules with the authority and airline.
