Official Import Rules
New Zealand has extremely strict biosecurity laws. Dogs must arrive as manifest cargo through Auckland or Christchurch airports only. Requirements: MPI import permit, ISO microchip, rabies vaccination, and a Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT) — performed via FAVN or RFFIT methodology — showing a result of ≥0.5 IU/ml. For dogs from Category 3 countries, the primary rabies vaccination must be administered at least 6 months (180 days) before import, and the RNATT blood sample must be drawn no less than 3 months before the date of shipment (and no more than 24 months old at the time of import). Once the 3-month post-blood-draw minimum has passed, the dog may travel at any time within the 24-month validity window, provided all other conditions are met. Additional requirements include approved external and internal parasite treatments, a government-endorsed health certificate, and a mandatory 10-day quarantine at an MPI-approved facility. Only dogs from MPI-approved countries may be imported. Hybrid dogs (dogs crossed with another species) are not eligible for importation, with the exception of Bengal dogs, which require documentation showing at least 5 generations of domestic ancestry. All eligible dogs must meet the same strict health requirements. MPI requires a minimum of 30 working days to process a complete and accurate import permit application, and recommends applying at least six weeks before travel to allow time for processing and flight booking.

City & Housing Notes
Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch are dog-friendly cities with excellent vet care. NZ has a strong focus on wildlife protection — many areas require dogs to be kept indoors or confined.
Vets & Health After Arrival
Excellent veterinary care. NZ Veterinary Association maintains a practice register. Common parasites: fleas and intestinal worms. No rabies in NZ.
Leaving New Zealand With Your Dog
Exiting NZ requires compliance with destination country rules. MPI can endorse health certificates. Plan 1-2 months ahead for document processing.
