Peru

Vet requirements, breed rules, airline realities and what happens at the border · updated 2026-02-16

Official Import Rules

Peru requires a current rabies vaccination (at least 30 days before travel) and a government-endorsed veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel. A microchip is recommended but not strictly required by Peruvian regulations. No import permit is needed for personal pet dogs. SENASA inspects animals on arrival at Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) in Lima. Peru is one of the easier South American countries for pet imports.

City & Housing Notes

Lima (Miraflores, Barranco), Cusco, and Arequipa are popular. Lima has good vet care, especially in upscale districts. Peru is moderately dog-friendly with a growing pet culture in urban areas.

Vets & Health After Arrival

Good vet care in Lima, especially in Miraflores and San Isidro. Outside Lima, vet quality drops considerably. Costs are very affordable. Altitude in cities like Cusco (3,400m) may affect your dog initially.

Leaving Peru With Your Dog

Exit requires a health certificate from a SENASA-approved vet. Processing is usually same-day or next-day at the SENASA office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Peru easy for pet imports?

Yes, one of the easier South American countries. No import permit needed, no quarantine, and straightforward documentation.

Will altitude affect my dog?

Possibly. If moving to highland cities like Cusco (3,400m) or Huaraz, your dog may need time to acclimatize. Lima is at sea level.

Is vet care affordable?

Very. A routine vet visit in Lima costs around S/50–100 (~$14–27).

Community Tips & Nearby Routes

Community reports are useful for practical details such as which cargo desk answers the phone, how long collection took, or whether a landlord asked for insurance. Treat them as tips, then verify rules with the authority and airline.
