City & Housing Notes

Ulaanbaatar is the only city with meaningful infrastructure. Nearly half of Mongolia's population lives here. Vet care is basic but improving. The extreme climate (-30°C winters, +35°C summers) requires indoor-only dogs for most of the year.

Vets & Health After Arrival

Limited vet care in Ulaanbaatar with a few adequate clinics. Outside UB, vet care for companion animals is virtually nonexistent. Extreme winter cold (-30 to -40°C) means dogs must be kept indoors. Bring essential medications.

Leaving Mongolia With Your Dog

Exit requires a health certificate from a GAVS-approved vet and an export permit. Processing takes 3–5 working days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dogs survive Mongolian winters?

Indoor dogs are fine — apartments in UB have central heating. Never let dogs outside in winter. Summers are pleasant but short.

Is UB the only realistic option?

Yes. Ulaanbaatar is the only city with adequate pet infrastructure. The countryside has virtually no companion animal vet services.

How do I fly a dog to Mongolia?

No direct flights from most Western countries. Common routes connect via Seoul (Korean Air), Beijing (MIAT), or Moscow (Aeroflot).

Community Tips & Nearby Routes

Community reports are useful for practical details such as which cargo desk answers the phone, how long collection took, or whether a landlord asked for insurance. Treat them as tips, then verify rules with the authority and airline.
