Official Import Rules

Standard EU entry: microchip, rabies vaccination 21+ days before travel, EU pet passport or health certificate. Denmark's defining dog rule is its breed ban — one of Europe's broadest.

Medical Roadmap

1

Microchip

ISO 11784/11785 microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination. The microchip number must match every certificate.

2

Rabies vaccination

Rabies vaccination must be valid before travel. Most routes require at least 21 days after a primary vaccination.

3

Health certificate or pet passport

Use an EU pet passport where accepted, or a government-endorsed animal health certificate for this route.

4

Travel day

Carry originals, confirm airline pet acceptance, and keep the official authority page saved offline.

Breed & Public-Space Rules

Breed restrictions

Denmark bans 13 breeds and their crosses: Pit Bull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Boerboel, Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd (Ovtcharka), Caucasian Shepherd (Ovtcharka), South Russian Shepherd (Ovtcharka), Tornjak and Šarplaninac. Banned dogs cannot enter Denmark — including transiting by car en route to Sweden or Norway. The burden of proof on crosses lies with the owner.

Muzzle & leash laws

No general muzzle law for permitted breeds; leash rules apply in most public areas and all forests March–October.

Flying In: Cabin, Hold or Cargo

SAS allows dogs up to 8 kg including carrier in the cabin; larger dogs in the hold. The breed ban, not the airline, is the gating factor for Denmark.

Cost Breakdown

Ahc€100–€250 from non-EU
Cabin Fee€60–€100 (SAS)
Dna Breed Test€60–€120 (recommended for lookalike breeds)

Quarantine Information

None for compliant, permitted dogs.

City & Housing Notes

Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Odense have excellent vet facilities. Denmark is very dog-friendly with strong welfare protections. Most apartments allow dogs. The Øresund Bridge connects Denmark to Sweden — useful for cross-border travel with pets.

Vets & Health After Arrival

Excellent veterinary care throughout Denmark. Den Danske Dyrlægeforening maintains a registry of vets. Emergency clinics available in Copenhagen and other major cities. Vet costs are moderate by Scandinavian standards.

Leaving Denmark With Your Dog

EU pet passport for onward travel; the Øresund route to Sweden is paperwork-light for permitted breeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive through Denmark to Sweden with an American Bulldog?

No — Denmark's ban covers transit, and American Bulldogs are on the list. Drive via Germany→ferry to Sweden, or fly direct. Owners have had dogs seized at the border on this exact route.

My dog looks like a banned breed but isn't — will I have problems?

Possibly. Danish law puts the burden of proof on the owner for suspected crosses. Carry pedigree papers or DNA breed-test results if your dog resembles anything on the 13-breed list.

Community Tips & Nearby Routes

Community reports are useful for practical details such as which cargo desk answers the phone, how long collection took, or whether a landlord asked for insurance. Treat them as tips, then verify rules with the authority and airline.
