China Eastern Airlines

China Eastern Airlines is one of mainland China's largest carriers and appears on direct routes between China and major international markets including Canada, Europe and Southeast Asia. Its published small-animal policy covers domesticated dogs and cats, but not as ordinary passenger-cabin pets. Small animals normally travel in the cargo cabin or through a freight arrangement, subject to aircraft oxygen-equipped hold availability, airport acceptance and weather limits.

Booking tip

Do not assume a China Eastern passenger ticket automatically creates a dog booking. Ask China Eastern whether the exact nonstop flight is operated by China Eastern or Shanghai Airlines, whether both airports accept small-animal handling, whether the aircraft has a suitable oxygen-equipped cargo compartment, and whether the forecast temperature stays inside the airline's limits on the travel day.

Why it can work

China Eastern can be a practical carrier to check first when it is the actual nonstop operator to Shanghai or another China gateway. A direct flight can reduce handovers and transit-country paperwork, provided the crate, veterinary documents, aircraft type and temperature limits are confirmed before payment.

Restrictions

No normal cabin pet travel. China Eastern says small animals are carried in the cargo cabin, and the service is limited to eligible nonstop flights operated by China Eastern or Shanghai Airlines with matching flight numbers. The airline may refuse long-haul nonstop routes, unsuitable aircraft, animals under 6 months, pregnant animals, aggressive or flat-nosed breeds, and travel where route temperatures are at or below -12 C or at or above 30 C. China Eastern has also published a suspension for dogs on flights to the United States because of CDC rules.

Dog-owner notes

Carry the destination import paperwork, export or quarantine certificates, rabies documents, microchip details where required, and an airline-compliant crate. If the crate exceeds the airline's checked-baggage size limit, China Eastern advises using a freight transporter. Confirm the check-in desk, cut-off time and document language directly with the airline.

Final check before paying

Confirm the exact aircraft, route, dog breed, carrier size, temperature rules and destination import law directly with the airline. A country can allow dogs while a specific airline or aircraft refuses them.
