Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines is a strong choice for pet owners on the US West Coast, offering cabin, checked baggage, and cargo options across its domestic and limited international network. The airline serves routes throughout the western US, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Japan. Unlike many US carriers that have suspended cargo programs, Alaska still operates a live animal shipping service through Alaska Air Cargo, making it one of the few remaining options for larger dogs that cannot travel in the cabin.

Booking tip

Book your pet at least 48 hours before departure by calling Alaska's reservation team — online booking for pets is not available. Alaska limits the number of in-cabin pets per flight, so reserve early on popular routes. As of June 2025, Alaska discontinued the option to purchase a cabin seat for pets (CBBG), so your dog must fit under the seat. Two pets of the same breed can share a single carrier if they both fit comfortably.

Why it can work

Alaska is one of the last major US carriers still offering a full cargo pet transport service for the general public, which is a significant advantage for owners of larger dogs or those relocating. The airline's extensive West Coast network — including service to Alaska, Hawaii, and Mexico — covers routes where other carriers have limited pet options. Alaska's checked baggage pet program also remains active, with pets transported in the pressurised, climate-controlled cargo hold.

Restrictions

Rabbits and household birds are only accepted until April 2026 for tickets purchased before June 2025. Only dogs and cats are permitted on flights to Hawaii, Canada, or international destinations. Pets must be at least 8 weeks old, fully weaned, and eating solid food for a minimum of five days. Not available in exit rows or bulkhead seats. Health certificates required for most routes.

Dog-owner notes

For Hawaii-bound travel, be aware that Hawaii has strict quarantine requirements — pets must complete the pre-arrival quarantine process to qualify for the 5-day-or-less program or face up to 120 days quarantine. Alaska's main hubs are Seattle (SEA), Portland (PDX), San Francisco (SFO), and Los Angeles (LAX). Alaska Air Cargo: 1-800-225-2752. Customer service for pet reservations: 1-800-252-7522.

Final check before paying

Confirm the exact aircraft, route, dog breed, carrier size, temperature rules and destination import law directly with the airline. A country can allow dogs while a specific airline or aircraft refuses them.
