Air Asia
AirAsia is Southeast Asia's largest low-cost carrier, headquartered in Kuala Lumpur and operating from its main hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA2). The airline serves over 165 destinations across 25 countries with dense networks across Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Its long-haul affiliate AirAsia X extends that reach to Australia, Japan, South Korea, and India. Despite its enormous reach, AirAsia does not accept dogs or any other pets on any flight — not in the cabin, not as checked baggage, and not as cargo. This total ban applies across both AirAsia and AirAsia X.

Booking tip
If AirAsia appears in your search results for a Southeast Asian route, you will need to book a different carrier. For domestic Thai routes such as Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Thai Airways accepts dogs as cargo. Malaysia Airlines accepts pets as checked baggage in the hold on some routes. For cabin travel in the region, Korean Air via Seoul is one of the few viable options. Specialist pet transport companies can advise on the best routing for complex moves.
Why it can work
While AirAsia itself offers no pet transport, being aware of this policy early is the most valuable thing a dog owner travelling in Southeast Asia can know. AirAsia dominates budget routes across the region, and discovering the ban at the airport would be catastrophic. Plan your routing around full-service carriers or cargo specialists from the outset.
Restrictions
Total ban — no pets accepted under any circumstances on AirAsia or AirAsia X. No cabin, no hold, no cargo. No exceptions for small dogs or soft-sided carriers. Guide dogs and certified assistance animals may be accommodated on specific routes with prior approval, but this does not apply to pet dogs.
Dog-owner notes
AirAsia's main hub is Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA2). For alternatives, see Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines, and Korean Air on this site. Starwood Animal Transport can arrange cargo bookings on appropriate carriers throughout Southeast Asia.
Final check before paying
Confirm the exact aircraft, route, dog breed, carrier size, temperature rules and destination import law directly with the airline. A country can allow dogs while a specific airline or aircraft refuses them.
