Aegean Airlines

Aegean Airlines is Greece's largest carrier and one of Europe's most genuinely pet-friendly airlines. Based in Athens with hubs in Thessaloniki and Larnaca (Cyprus), Aegean offers cabin and hold pet transport across its European, Middle Eastern, and North African network. The airline stands out for its affordable pet fees — just €35 for domestic Greek flights and €65 for international routes — making it one of the cheapest options in Europe. Aegean is a Star Alliance member, providing connection options through Athens.

Booking tip

Aegean allows online pet booking on many routes, which is a major convenience compared to carriers that require phone calls. You can book up to 2 hours before departure, though early booking is recommended. Window seats are encouraged for pet passengers. If you do not have a carrier, Aegean ground staff can provide an appropriate one at the airport — a unique service among European airlines. Connecting flights with hold pets are limited to 3-hour maximum connection times.

Why it can work

Aegean's pet fees are among the lowest in Europe, and the airline's extensive Greek domestic and island-hopping network is ideal for dog owners exploring the Mediterranean. The airline's acceptance of two pets per passenger (same species, same carrier, under 8 kg total) is generous. Aegean serves all EU member states plus Albania, Armenia, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, and the UK (cargo only). The airline has earned a 5/5 rating from pet travel review sites.

Restrictions

Cabin pets not permitted alongside infants. Pets to Dubai and Abu Dhabi must travel as cargo only — cabin and hold are not available. UK flights only to London Heathrow and only as cargo; from Gatwick, cargo only. Dangerous dog breeds including Rottweiler, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Dogo Argentino are banned. Brachycephalic breeds restricted from hold. Minimum age 12 weeks with valid rabies vaccination.

Dog-owner notes

Aegean also operates Olympic Air, which serves smaller Greek islands and domestic routes under the same pet policy. A Live Animal Acceptance Checklist must be completed and signed at the airport check-in desk. EU Pet Passport with microchip, rabies vaccination, and 21-day waiting period required for international travel. Cargo enquiries: +30 210 354 3700 or info-cargo@aegeanair.com.

Final check before paying

Confirm the exact aircraft, route, dog breed, carrier size, temperature rules and destination import law directly with the airline. A country can allow dogs while a specific airline or aircraft refuses them.
